NOTES

Note historiqueL'intérêt de ce appareil RC est qu'il réalisa la première traversée de la Manche, piloté depuis un avion accompagnateur Auster, le 23 septembre 1954.
Radio Queen. Radio control model. Famously the first RC model to fly across the English Channnel in September 1954.
Original design by Lt Col LJ Taplin. Structural modifications by Pte Cook.
The Radio Queen was designed by Lt Col L.J. Taplin in the early 1950s and has a fascinating history, the first model
aircraft to cross the English Channel, September 1954. That particular model was powered by an ED diesel and guided
by an ED "reed" radio; a replica of this 'channel crossing' aircraft is displayed at the Academy of Model Aeronautics headquarters/museum in Muncie, Indiana. The Radio Queen was originally kitted by ED, then by Kandoo Products, and appears to be currently available from Ben Buckle Vintage Models The 84" span model shown here, with modernization and updates by Skystone Plans' Jim Johnson in 2005, somewhat resembles the iconic Telemaster aircraft with a .40 engine suggested for leisurely sport flying. Taplin, the designer, was also renowned for the model aircraft
engines he designed and produced, engines now much sought after by engine collectors.
